Peers Actively Learning Social Skills

Awareness. Confidence. Empathy.

The goal of PALSS is to foster a positive and nurturing environment that helps children identify and apply good social interaction practices in the proper emotional context.

The skills we address.

SELF-AWARENESS: Managing emotions
Building interpersonal skills
Promoting self-advocacy
PEER RELATIONSHIPS: Making/keeping friends
Reading body language
Learning empathy/compassion
PROBLEM SOLVING: Taking/keeping perspective
Using problem-solving techniques
Resolving conflicts amicably

A holistic approach.

Academics learned in the school setting are essential, but good social skills are the foundation that allows one to be successful beyond the classroom. Regardless of intelligence and language skills, some children can have social skill deficits which make it difficult for them to make and keep friends.

We teach social skills in a safe and non-intimidating environment with like-age peers to encourage cooperation and teamwork. This results in a higher rate of knowledge retention than a traditional classroom setting.

We incorporate approaches from several fields including occupational therapy, behavioral therapy, speech pathology, and music to ensure that all learning styles are addressed and respected.
